The Hato de la Aurora Natural Reserve offers a unique ecotourism experience in Colombia's eastern plains. During your stay at the Juan Solito Ecolodge, you will enjoy comfortable accommodation, full meals featuring typical regional dishes, and a variety of activities guided by local experts. The activities included in the program are:
(Duration: up to 4 hours) A tranquil and scenic journey by motorboat (in the rainy season) or smaller boats (in the dry season), where you can discover the wildlife along the riverbanks. During the tour, you may spot howler monkeys, anacondas, horned screamers, Orinoco ducks, caimans, and turtles. Along the route, you might see great egrets fishing, caimans sunbathing on the riverbanks, and gull families crossing the river's beaches. Boats are equipped with seats, sun protection covers, and life jackets for added safety.
(Duration: 4 to 10 hours) This is one of the Reserve's most iconic tours, allowing you to immerse yourself in its natural landscapes and observe its abundant wildlife. The tour begins after breakfast at the Juan Solito Ecolodge, crossing the Ariporo River in a canoe and then boarding 4x4 vehicles (jeeps or trucks). During the tour, guided by experts, you can spot species such as large groups of capybaras, caimans, Orinoco geese, iguanas, scarlet ibis, great egrets, arucos, and wild horses. With a high likelihood, you may see deer, buffalo, macaws, and the majestic jabiru stork. Occasionally, depending on weather conditions and luck, you may spot anacondas, Orinoco crocodiles, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, and snakes.
(Duration: 4 hours, starts at 4:30 a.m.) A magical experience to observe the awakening of the plains and its wildlife. It starts before sunrise in a vehicle, followed by a guided walk around the La Matepalma lagoon. Conducted in the early morning, this safari offers a greater chance of spotting mammals such as the giant anteater and herds of white-tailed deer, along with a variety of birds feeding in the wetlands during the first hours of light. During the tour, you can listen to the birds' songs while enjoying a hot cup of coffee in nature. This activity is not available in advanced rainy seasons due to terrain conditions.
(Duration: up to 4 hours) A horseback tour along designated trails, forests, plains, and wetlands, offering a unique connection to the Llanos landscape. This experience is ideal for both experienced riders and beginners, as the horses are tame and Llanero guides accompany you throughout the route. During the ride, you can observe bird species such as arucos and tautacos. In the summer, it is possible to cross the Ariporo River on horseback, enabling greater exploration of the territory. In winter, routes are adapted to accessible paths according to weather conditions.
Day walks last up to 4 hours, while night walks last approximately 2 hours. These are conducted on the 'El Bienparado' and 'El Sendero de los Micos' trails, chosen based on the time available and the tour schedule. During night walks, you can listen to and identify the sounds of the forest, recognizing the wildlife that produces them. On these walks, you may spot jacamars, parrots, woodpeckers, guacharacas, howler monkeys, agoutis, turtles, and snakes. In the rainy season, it is recommended to wear rubber boots and windbreakers for greater comfort.
